MANUEL VELASTEGUI
Works in Metal, Marble & Wood
Metal, marble and wood. These are the three materials used by Ecuadorian sculptor Manuel Velastegui in creating the highly original sculptures now on exhibit in ArtsEcho Galleria.
From Guayaquil, Ecuador, Velastegui is a member of the Metropolitan Academy of Painters and Sculptors of New York and the Contemporary Group of Plastic Artists of San Remo, Italy. Manuel Velastegui is a sculptor who has exhibited throughout the world.
Among the many honors he has received is First Prize for Sculpture in the Festival of the Americas in NY. His work has been presented widely in solo exhibitions in venues including Lincoln Center in NY, Museo de la Nacion in Lima, Peru, Bottega D’Arte in San Remo, Italy, and the Institute of Art and Culture in Washington, DC.
Today, many artists are finding the benefits of re-using existing materials, but this has always been one of the tenets of Velastegui’s work. His sculptures are not only impressive for their astonishing artistic achievements, but for the fact that he finds grace and beauty in existing forms not originally valued for their inherent artistic worth.
Velastegui’s metal sculptures are created by recycling used engine parts. His fascinating and beautiful “Carousel” is made from the clutch pressure plate of an antique car. He manages to achieve a powerful sense of grace with the weightiest metals using valves, pistons, crankshafts and flywheels to create his statues.
Using a giant spring, Velastegui made his humorous “Hat Tree” sculpture that moves with kinetic force. The two elegant statues of Don Quixote on exhibit in ArtsEcho Galleria are about 1 1/2 feet high, but in the Parque Lineal in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Velastegui created a "Tribute to Don Quixote" (in honor of the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’ famous creation) that is over 13 feet high. Like many of the great artists of the past, Manuel Velastegui follows a path totally his own.
